Parks Commission Meets This Week to Discuss Needs at City Parks

The monthly meeting of the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Commission will be held Wednesday, April 24, 3:30-5 p.m., at Tucson Parks and Recreation (Mesquite Room), 900 S. Randolph Way. 

The commission serves as a citizens advisory panel to the Mayor and Tucson City Council on issues such as recreational and park activities within the city, operations policy and procedures, user fees, park development, and park name changes.

Walk This Week at Udall Center

Tucson Parks and Recreation is hosting a walking event on Friday, April 26, 6 a.m.-8 p.m., at the Morris K. Udall Recreation Center, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road, to celebrate National Walking Day. Membership passes or the center's daily use fees ($1.50 for adults/$1 for youth 17 years and under/$1 for seniors 62 years and older) apply.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, there will be raffle prize drawings every two hours. For more information call (520) 791-4931. 

City Hiring Transportation Administrator

The Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) is seeking a qualified applicant to join its planning and programming division.

This position manages the activities and personnel of the transportation division. The transportation administrator also directs, manages, supervises, and oversees the Complete Streets Program, Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, projects within the Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP), administers federally funded projects, and plans traditional roadway and transit projects.

All of Ward 2 except for some neighborhoods in the Ft. Lowell area are part of the Police Department’s Operations Division East. The command staff for ODE holds quarterly meetings with neighborhood leaders and interested citizens called the Division Advisory Committee.

The latest one of those meetings was this week, and we had some interesting news. Crime on the east side is down, and down considerably.

Solar Celebration Next Week

A news conference and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 934 kW solar installation at Reid Park will be held Monday, April 22, at 10 a.m., near the Rose Garden. Join Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, Tucson Parks and Recreation, the City's Environmental & General Services Department, and SOLON Corporation to celebrate the large amount of solar being built this year at City facilities. Light refreshments will be provided. 

Traffic Alert and Restricted Access to “A” Mountain Good Friday Cross Procession and Easter Service Road Closures and Alternate Route

This weekend, “A” Mountain will host the Good Friday Cross Procession (La Procession de Viernes Santo) and Easter Sunday Sunrise Services (La Misa al Amanecer) which will restrict user access to Sentinel Peak Park. In order to accommodate these events, Sentinel Peak Road will close at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 19. The road will reopen for pedestrians and bicyclists on Saturday, April 20, at 8 a.m. and at 9 a.m. for vehicles. The roadway will again close on Saturday, April 20, at 8 p.m. and will reopen to vehicles at noon on Sunday, April 21.
