Asian Lanterns Light Up Zoo Starting Thursday

Reid Park Zoo is partnering with Tianyu Arts & Culture Inc., UA Global, and the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center to bring more than 400 colorful, interactive, and customized lantern displays to Southern Arizona this spring.

The Asian Lantern Festival is Thursday through Sunday (Feb. 13-March 1), 6-9 p.m., and then nightly from March 5-29, 6-9 p.m. The family-friendly event features Asian-inspired entertainment, cuisine, and activities, and 80% of the lanterns will be new to the Zoo.

I became very frustrated the other night at the council meeting over what might be considered an obscure subject: impact fees.

Impact fees are charged to developers for new construction. Cities and counties impose them because new development means that services in that area, whether it’s roads, parks, water or sewers, need to be expanded.

Tucson Industrial Development Authority Launches New Mortgage Credit Certificate Program

The Industrial Development Authority of the City of Tucson recently launched the 2020 Mortgage Credit Certificate (MCC) Program, administered by Advantage Housing Services LLC, to help first-time homebuyers become homeowners. The MCC Program is designed to reduce a first-time homebuyer’s federal income tax bill by providing an annual dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of 40 percent of the mortgage interest paid, up to $2,000.

Volunteer Foot Marshals Needed for Tucson Rodeo Parade

The Tucson Rodeo Parade takes place Thursday, Feb. 20, beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers are needed to serve as foot marshals along the parade route. Foot marshals help with traffic control and other areas critical to a successful, safe parade.

A mandatory safety meeting will be held tomorrow, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds T-Barn (far north end), 4823 S. 6th Ave. Please arrive early to sign in and receive paperwork.

Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Underpass at Grant Road Improvement Project

The City of Tucson Transportation Department has started the pre-construction investigative phase of work which includes; surface, subsurface, geotechnical, environmental and survey verification field activities. The traveling public will see equipment, work crews and short-term travel restrictions during this phase of work.

On Monday, February 10 through Friday, February 14, the contractor will perform underground utility verification operations within the outside lanes of eastbound and westbound Grant Road.

Work will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
