Arizona Wildcat Hockey has its first home game of the 2019-2020 season at the Tucson Arena tomorrow, Oct. 17, against the Colorado Buffaloes. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Bicycle Boulevards Community Input Events

The City of Tucson Transportation Department is planning two bicycle and pedestrian safety improvement projects. The Third Street and Treat Avenue Bicycle Boulevard projects will use neighborhood streets to expand the low-stress biking network citywide by creating north/south and east/west routes to jobs, neighborhood destinations, schools, and parks.
Tucson Shelters Host Joint Mega-Adoption Event This Weekend

Pima Animal Care Center (PACC), 4000 N. Silverbell Road, is teaming up with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA), 635 W. Roger Road, and the Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter and Sanctuary, 5278 E. 21st St., to get 600 pets adopted in the “Tucson Shelters United” mega-adoption event, this Friday-Sunday, Oct. 18-20.
Health and Wellness Fair Tomorrow at Armory Park Center

Tucson Parks and Recreation will host a public Health and Wellness Fair tomorrow, Oct. 17, at the Armory Park Center, 220 S. 5th Ave. From 9 a.m.-noon, various exhibitors will be offering free information, services, and referrals for the senior community.
Walgreens will be on hand to offer flu, pneumonia, and shingles vaccinations. Please bring your insurance card. For more information, call (520) 791-4865.
Deadline Approaching to Register for Parks and Recreation Classes

Next Monday, Oct. 21, is the last day to register for fall classes at Tucson Parks and Recreation. The combined fall 2019/spring 2020 Activity Guide is online, and printed copies are available at any Parks and Recreation center, pool, or administration office. Copies also are available at local libraries.
Runway Drive – Gardner Lane to Prince Road Intersection Work

On Thursday, October 17, 2019, crews will begin reconstructing the intersection of Runway Drive and Gardner Lane. This work is associated with the current voter-approved Proposition 101 Tucson Delivers Better Streets project taking place on Runway Drive between Prince Road and Gardner Lane.
During the reconstruction and repaving of the intersection, flagging operations will be in place to assist motorists through the intersection safely.

G.A.I.N. stands for Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods and is Arizona's answer to National Night Out, which is held in August. Because of high summer temperatures, communities statewide decided to observe National Night Out in October and call it G.A.I.N.
Water Scavenger Hunt Continues

Tucson Water is holding a scavenger hunt and offering three $50 Visa Gift Cards or a set of limited-edition, water-themed vinyl stickers created by a local artist as prizes.
Use your smartphone to find the items in the hunt, which include Tucson Tap Water, Pete the Beak, Rainwater Harvesting, Kino Environmental Restoration Project, Santa Cruz River Heritage Project, Splash Pads, and Sweetwater Wetlands. The next quarterly meeting of the Unified Community Advisory Board (UCAB) is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16, 5:45 p.m., at the El Pueblo Neighborhood Center, 101 W. Irvington Road. UCAB hosts meetings regarding the Tucson International Airport Area EPA Superfund Site/Tucson Airport Remediation Project and the City of Tucson’s efforts and commitment to provide clean and safe water to the community.

With the changes to our curb-side recycling program, I thought it would be a good time to remind all of you that the neighborhood recycling center at the Ward 2 office is still open and ready for all of your recyclables.
A few years ago, the neighborhood recycling center was located at Udall Park, but the bins were moved to our lot when there was a lot of what is termed in the recycling business “contamination.” The rest of us would call it, “things that are pretty obviously not supposed to be thrown into the recycling bin.”
Tucson City Council Closer to New Rules Regarding Tobacco Sales

The Mayor and Tucson City Council yesterday, Oct. 10, voted 4-3 to advance a plan to raise the age for buying tobacco and vaping products in city limits from 18 to 21. The plan, brought forth by Ward 3 Council member Paul Durham, will come back for a final vote on the proposed ordinance on Oct. 22.
If approved, the ordinance would take effect on Jan. 1, 2020. For more information on the proposal, read Mayor and Council agenda materials (item 3).
2nd Saturdays Downtown is Tomorrow

The next 2nd Saturdays Downtown takes place tomorrow, Oct. 12. Events during the day include Locomotive Saturday at the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum, Living History Day at the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson, and Family Brain Boost at Children's Museum Tucson. Evening events include live music at the Mercado San Agustin and other locations.
