The City of Tucson recently received its largest-ever Lead Hazard Reduction Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for its Lead Hazard Control Program and Healthy Homes Program. This grant will bring nearly $4 million into our community, dedicated solely to keeping families safe from lead hazards and various unhealthy conditions in their homes.

Tucson Parks and Recreation is offering a program for youth 5-11 years old during fall break, Oct. 7-11, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $25 for city residents and $31 for non-residents.
Supervised activities include games, sports, social interaction, dance, art projects, and nutrition-based learning. Visit the 'Schoolzout Camps' website for a list of locations and to register.

Safely dispose of any paints, chemicals, oils, pesticides, and certain other items that are sitting unused in your shed or garage. The City of Tucson Eastside Service Center, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd., is open Saturday, Oct. 5, 8 a.m.-noon, for household hazardous waste collection.

Planning and Development Services (PDSD) will have a significant number of building plan reviewers and inspectors attending the Arizona Building Officials (AZBO) 2019 Fall Educational Institute on Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11. As a result, there will be limited PDSD staff available for plan review and building inspections during that week.

Tucson lost one of its finest citizens this week. Roger Tamietti, former Tucson Fire Department captain, union leader and friend to many of us passed away on Wednesday morning after cancer surgery.
I came into this job with a lot of swagger, but I was quickly overwhelmed. I met Roger on my third day. He was the friendliest guy of any of the people I had met in that first week, and the only one that made me feel like I was up to the job. He had a way of making everyone around him comfortable. It was his gift, and not one that you will find many people have.

The Tucson City Clerk's Office is scheduled to mail "The Choice is Yours" on Thursday, Oct. 3. These publicity pamphlets will go out to registered voters in the city for the Nov. 5 general election.
Along with some propositions on the ballot, city voters will choose the next Mayor and members of the Tucson City Council in Wards 1, 2, and 4.

The Tucson Convention Center's (TCC) professional management company, SMG, this week joined forces with AEG Facilities to form the new venue management powerhouse ASM Global.
Under this new company’s management, the TCC will now be part of a family of more than 300 of the world’s most prestigious arenas, stadiums, performing arts venues, and convention and exhibit centers spanning five continents and 14 countries.

The City of Tucson Transportation Department is planning two bicycle and pedestrian safety improvement projects. The Third Street and Treat Avenue Bicycle Boulevard projects will use neighborhood streets to expand the low-stress biking network citywide by creating north/south and east/west routes to jobs, neighborhood destinations, schools, and parks.

Several Tucson organizations will be hosting a tour of local manufacturing sites and Pima Community College to celebrate Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) on Friday, Oct. 4. Two groups of students from Amphitheater High School will tour local businesses to learn what manufacturing is and what it isn't.

The 2019 SAHBA Fall Home & Garden Show takes place on Oct. 4, 5, and 6 at the Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Ave. Show hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
More than 300 exhibitors will feature new products, services, and ideas for making your home more comfortable and more energy efficient.
General admission is $8, with special pricing for military and seniors, and parking is free.
