My office has been fielding calls about two large possible developments about Houghton Road. In addition to having questions and concerns about the details of these projects, we are getting many calls asking about the process. Almost a year ago, I wrote a piece explaining the basics about how rezonings work. I’ve reprinted it below.
Tucson Parks and Recreation and Humana present the 36th annual Senior Olympic Festival. This festival is a celebration to promote fitness, health, and an active lifestyle among adults 50 years of age and older. Events include volleyball, bowling, bridge, racquetball, basketball shoot, pickleball, archery, golf, tennis, horseshoes, badminton, and so much more. Opening ceremonies will be held Friday, Jan. 10, from 1-3 p.m. at Udall Park Amphitheater.
The annual All Souls Procession and Grand Finale, one of Tucson's signature events, begins at 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3. The 1.5 mile route starts at West Speedway Boulevard and North Grande Avenue and proceeds south to the finale site between the Santa Cruz River and the Mercado San Agustín on West Congress Street.
Safely dispose of any paints, chemicals, oils, pesticides, and certain other items that are sitting unused in your shed or garage. The City of Tucson Eastside Service Center, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd., is open Saturday, Nov. 2, 8 a.m.-noon, for household hazardous waste collection.

Advision, a vendor under contract with the City of Tucson, is responsible for making sure bus stops are clean and maintained. There are more than 1,700 Sun Tran bus stops in the service area and Advision is responsible for power washing (when necessary) and removing litter, including cigarette butts.
The Barrio Hollywood and Menlo Park neighborhoods will be the site of the 30th annual All Souls Procession on Sunday, November 3, 2019. The 2019 route parallels the Santa Cruz River. The procession begins at 6 p.m. on Grande Avenue south of Speedway Boulevard, turns left on St. Mary’s Road, then right onto Bonita Avenue. It flows around the Garden of Gethsemane toward the Finale Site, situated between the river and the Mercado San Agustin.
In an effort to better protect privacy and provide exceptional service, Tucson City Court will be transitioning to an Arizona Court Automation Project (ACAP) court of the Arizona Supreme Court during the weekend of Nov. 1-3.
To accommodate the change, the Court will be closed on Friday, Nov. 1. Online services will not be available Nov. 1-3 as computer systems will be down during the transition, and there is potential for limited service on Nov. 4.
The Pima Association of Governments (PAG), in partnership with the City of Tucson, is developing a Long-Range Regional Transit Plan. The draft plan was developed after a review of all public comments and surveys from 2018.
The Sun Link streetcar expects to board its 5 millionth passenger tomorrow, Oct. 31. In celebration of this milestone, Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild will greet the 5 millionth rider on board and present him or her with prizes and gift certificates from businesses along the route.
Tucson's first responders are urging parents, kids, and drivers to be extra cautious during Halloween activities tomorrow night.
The Tucson Police Department (TPD) says young children can easily get distracted by lights and dart across the street without looking for cars first. Nationwide, more kids get hit and killed by cars on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
A new HAWK pedestrian crossing signal is being installed at the intersection of 22nd Street and Belvedere Avenue. Crews are working 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on weekdays, and two lanes of travel will be maintained in each direction on 22nd Street.
Expect delays when driving in this work area and obey all traffic control signs. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November, barring changes due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
