First Ave North of River Road Repaving Project

On Monday, September 23, 2019, Granite Construction, under contract with the City of Tucson Transportation Department, will begin work to repave First Avenue from River Road north to the city limit line, approximately 120 feet.

During this three-day reconstruction and repaving project, there will be single lane closures on River Road and on First Avenue. One travel lane in each direction will be maintained. For the safety of the traveling public, 24-hour lane restrictions will be in place during the project. Work hours will be 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Hi Corbett Sandbag Distribution Site to Reopen - Tropical Storm Lorena

To assist residents with property protection from potential heavy rain due to Tropical Storm Lorena, the City of Tucson Transportation Department will reopen its sandbag distribution site on Friday, September 20, 2019, at 2 p.m. in the east parking lot of Hi Corbett Field, 700 S. Randolph Way, at Reid Park. At this location, sand and sandbags will be provided. Residents should bring their own shovel and be prepared to fill their own sandbags. There is a limit of 10 bags per vehicle.

The City of Tucson’s Environmental & General Services Department (EGSD) will change residential recycling collection from every week to every other week beginning the week of Sept. 30.

The day of the week for a customer's recycling collection will not change. A bill insert with a map and schedule is included with September utility services statements. Each resident will also receive a direct mail piece listing their collection schedule and map.

Third Street and Treat Avenue Bicycle Boulevards Community Input Events

The City of Tucson Transportation Department is planning two bicycle and pedestrian safety improvement projects. The Third Street and Treat Bicycle Boulevard projects will use neighborhood streets to expand the citywide low-stress biking network by creating north/south and east/west routes to jobs, neighborhood destinations, schools, and parks.

Free Real Estate Expo is Tomorrow

The Tucson Association of Realtors is hosting a free expo tomorrow, Sept. 19, at the Tucson Convention Center, Exhibition Halls B & C, 260 S. Church Ave. The 10 a.m.-3 p.m. event features more than 120 exhibitors displaying industry goods and local services.

The City of Tucson's Water and Transportation departments will also staff a table with information for the public and for real estate agents. Entertainment includes a costume contest, high school dance team, and raffles.

Re-Entry Job Fair at Tucson Convention Center

Second Chance Tucson, in coordination with the Mayor’s Office, will hold a free Re-Entry Job and Resource Fair tomorrow, Sept. 19. The 1-4 p.m. event is intended to help formerly incarcerated individuals find employment.

Local employers will be on hand, and attendees can meet with company representatives and receive information on community resources. A "How to Work a Job Fair" workshop will be held every 30 minutes from noon until 2 p.m.

Be a Volunteer at Tucson Meet Yourself Festival

The Tucson Meet Yourself festival, Oct. 11-13, is recruiting volunteers for a variety of tasks essential to the event. Opportunities include set-up (begins Oct. 8), beverage distribution, merchandise assistant, donation collection, stage assistant, volunteer registration, and more.

Volunteers may choose the shift and day preferred based on availability. An email sent to those who register will contain links to a video and handbook about the volunteer experience.

City Recruiting Building Inspector

The City of Tucson Planning and Development Services Department (PDSD) is seeking a building inspector to research codes and regulations, complete and enter inspection reports, and maintain contact with contractors and builders for inspection requirements. This position may conduct site, residential, and/or commercial property inspections to ensure compliance with building safety codes.

The Arizona Daily Star ran a feature this weekend on families that are in Section 8 housing that are facing losing their homes as landlords turn away from wanting tenants that use the program.

There are a number of reasons why this is happening, and they run the gamut from the way the program has been administered at the federal level to the lack of affordable housing stock despite the amount of new development we’ve had in recent years.
