Participate in the Water Scavenger Hunt

Tucson Water is holding a scavenger hunt and offering three $50 Visa Gift Cards or a set of limited-edition, water-themed vinyl stickers created by a local artist as prizes.

Use a smartphone to find the items in the hunt (Tucson Tap Water, Pete the Beak, Rainwater Harvesting, Kino Environmental Restoration Project, Santa Cruz River Heritage Project, Splash Pads, Sweetwater Wetlands, and surprise bonus rounds), take a picture, and post it with the hashtag #520H2O.

Sandbag Distribution Ends This Week

As the region’s monsoon nears its end, the City of Tucson Transportation Department’s Operation Splash sandbag program will conclude this week. The pre-filled sandbag distribution site at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds (4823 S. 6th Ave.) from 4-8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 11, will be the last of the season. The self-service sandbag operation in the Hi Corbett Field east parking lot (700 S. Randolph Way) will end this Friday, Sept. 13, at noon.

Both sites will reopen if the weather forecast calls for heavy rain and flooding in the fall.

Operation Splash Sandbag Distribution Concludes

As the region’s monsoon season comes to an end, the City of Tucson Transportation Department’s Operation Splash Sandbag Program will conclude this week. The Tucson Rodeo Grounds sandbag distribution will end on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at 8 p.m. The site opens at 4 p.m. for people to pick up pre-filled sandbags. The self-serve sandbag operations in the Hi Corbett Field east parking lot will end Friday, September 13, 2019, at noon.

Traffic Alert - Tucson Delivers Better Streets, Runway Drive

On Monday, September 16, 2019, the reconstruction and repaving of Runway Drive from Gardner Lane to Prince Road is set to begin. This project is part of the voter-approved Proposition 101 Tucson Delivers Better Streets Program.

Granite Construction, under contract with the Transportation Department, will begin the improvement project by lowering manhole covers and water valve covers. Crews will then mill (remove) asphalt, lime treat the subgrade, install new asphalt and raise the manhole covers and water valve covers flush with the new asphalt.

Biweekly Recycling Collection Starts Sept. 30

The City of Tucson’s Environmental & General Services Department (EGSD) will change residential recycling collection from every week to every other week beginning the week of Sept. 30.

The day of the week for a customer's recycling collection will not change. A bill insert with a map and schedule is included with September utility services statements. Each resident will also receive a direct mail piece listing their collection schedule and map.

Still Time to Take Public Survey on Future of Anza Park

The City of Tucson would like the community's input on possible improvements to Anza Park. The park is located at 1000 N. Stone Ave. on the southeast corner of Speedway Boulevard and Stone Avenue.

The property was acquired by the City as part of the original townsite in 1872 and is a contributing property in the West University historic neighborhood. A survey is available online, through Sept. 14, for those who would like to provide their input.

Our Summer months are not our strongest time for tourism in the Old Pueblo, but it does give us a chance to assess where we are as a destination.

Visit Tucson made a presentation last week on lodging performance, basically, how many nights are people staying in Tucson hotels and how much are they spending on those rooms. The numbers look good for us.

Interestingly, the three measures that the industry uses, occupancy, average daily rate and revenue per available room, has remained stagnant nationwide. Tucson’s numbers in those categories are projected to grow.
