Paul's Note - November 29th, 2019

You all have turkeys to defrost so I’ll keep things short. This week, I’m thankful that I have a wonderful family: my wife, my sons and two magnificent parents. I’m also thankful that I get to serve the people of a city that I love for another four years.

Tucson’s struggles aren’t unique, but we have faced our challenges while in ways that other communities haven’t. I’ll take some credit for that, but credit also goes to all of you as citizens and taxpayers. Thank you.

Parade of Lights Road Closures

Downtown Tucson will host the 25th Annual Parade of Lights on Saturday, November 30, 2019. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. on Stone Avenue just south of Toole Avenue and proceeds south on Stone Avenue, turns east on Pennington Street to Sixth Avenue, continues north to Toole Avenue, then turns west and ends on Toole Avenue just east of Stone Avenue.

City Services Affected by Thanksgiving Holiday This Week

The City of Tucson will observe the Thanksgiving holiday this Thursday, Nov. 28. Except for emergency services, all City offices will be closed.

Residential and commercial trash and recycling will not be collected on Thursday, and customers with Thursday and Friday collections will have their service delayed by one day. The Los Reales Landfill will be closed on Thursday.

Tucson Holiday Ice Rink to Open the Day after Thanksgiving

Rio Nuevo and the City of Tucson invite you to skate on Tucson's first-ever outdoor ice rink over the holidays. Tucson Holiday Ice on 5th Avenue will be open from Nov. 29 through Jan. 5 at 45 N. 5th Ave. (MLK lot/Depot Garage lot).

All purchases must be made directly at the ice rink. Ice skates are included with the cost of all-day admission (no discount for bringing your own skates).

Parade of Lights and Festival is Saturday

The 25th Annual Parade of Lights & Festival, presented by Mister Car Wash, is this Saturday, Nov. 30. The festival in Jácome Plaza begins at 4:30 p.m. with live entertainment. The tree lighting ceremony is at 5:30 p.m.

The Parade of Lights begins at 6:30 p.m. It starts at Stone Avenue and Toole Avenue, proceeds south to Pennington Street, then heads north back to Toole Avenue and west to its starting point.

Tucson Water Offers Tips to Protect Pipes and Plumbing During Cold Weather

With cold morning temperatures expected this coming weekend, the risk increases for exposed pipes and plumbing to freeze. Tucson Water offers tips to help prevent pipes, plumbing, irrigation systems, and backflow prevention assemblies from freezing. There is also information about what to do if something has frozen.

City Recruiting Fuel Station Mechanic

The City of Tucson is hiring a fuel station mechanic to work in its Environmental & General Services Department (EGSD). The position is responsible for maintaining the operation of refueling stations, natural gas compressors, and related equipment.

A fuel station mechanic also maintains records, reports, and inventory, and may help perform scheduled and emergency maintenance. The job is subject to after-hours and weekend work as needed.

Keep Cooking Oil and Grease Out Of Drains and Sewers

 Extra cooking for the upcoming holidays means that it’s time to help protect your sewer pipes and the system in general. The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) reminds you that pouring cooking oil and grease down pipes can clog and damage sewer lines.

Please take these items to Pima County’s Agua Nueva Water Reclamation Facility, 2947 W. Calle Agua Nueva, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m. The oils and grease can be recycled into biodiesel, a cleaner-burning fuel.

Installation Rescheduled for Pedestrian Crossing Signal on 22nd Street

A new HAWK pedestrian crossing signal will be installed at the intersection of 22nd Street and Belvedere Avenue. Beginning Monday, Dec. 2, crews will work from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on weekdays, and two lanes of travel will be maintained in each direction on 22nd Street.

Expect delays when driving in this work area and obey all traffic control signs. The project is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of January, barring changes due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

City Recruiting Engineering Manager

The City of Tucson is hiring an engineering manager to work in its Transportation Department. The position will manage and coordinate several programs, including the Right-of-Way Permit & Code Section, the Utility Coordination & Technical Review Section, and the City's MS4 Permit and Stormwater/Floodplain Administration. The manager also supervises personnel and directs the operations of the engineering section.
