FALL IS AN IDEAL TIME TO PLANT DESERT SHADE TREES; GREAT SELECTION OF TREES AVAILABLE FOR HOME SHADE

The Trees for Tucson program is now accepting applications for low-cost trees for delivery in the popular fall planting period. While trees can be planted throughout the year in the Tucson area, lower temperatures and moister soil after summer monsoons make for easier tree planting throughout the fall. Wetter than usual winter weather is also expected due to El Niño weather patterns, making this an optimum time to begin establishing new trees.
 

Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year the United States honors the contributions that Latinos have made to our great country with Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 till October 15.   The annual, month long celebration began 26 years ago.  Congress had first passed a resolution to celebrate Hispanic Heritage at the national level, as a week long event on September 17, 1968.  Nearly 20 years later, on August 17, 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to a month. 

Tucson Close to Ending Veterans Homelessness

Through an initiative launched by the City of Tucson and other local agencies in 2013, about 1,200 formerly-homeless veterans now have permanent housing. There are still 442 to go, but Mayor Jonathan Rothschild expects them all to be in apartments by the end of the year.

“If we work diligently over the next four months, we’re on pace to make our goal,” Rothschild said. “Based on our experience from the last 27-28 months and given the additional focus, we should be there.”

Streetcar Stops to Help Celebrate Edgar Allan Poe

The Sun Link streetcar is displaying Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” on the overhead signs at select stops along the route. There are 23 stops along the streetcar route, 11 of which contain special LED panels that are displaying poetry curated by the University of Arizona Poetry Center. The streaming of the two Poe classics will run though the end of this month.

Grande Avenue – Speedway Boulevard to Congress Street Stamped Asphalt Work

On Monday, September 21, 2015, crews from Sunland Asphalt, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin decorative stamped (brick pattern) asphalt work on Grande Avenue from Speedway Boulevard Congress Street.

Grande Avenue will be closed to through traffic from Congress Street to St. Mary’s Road on Monday, September 21, 2015 beginning at 6 p.m. and will reopen to through traffic at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2015. Access to residential streets along Grande Avenue will be allowed.

City of Tucson Traffic Safety Camera Program

In 2007, Tucson’s Mayor and Council approved a program to help cut down the number of auto accidents, injuries and fatalities at the City’s eight most dangerous intersections.

 

This program had photo cameras placed at these intersections to deal with speed and running red lights.

 

The Mayor and Council received updates on the program, which showed a reduction of accidents, injuries and fatalities.   In July, I had requested that the Mayor and Council receive a report on this program.

VOTER-APPROVED ROAD WORK BEGINS MONDAY - A two-week fog seal program starts next week. Starting Monday, crews from Southern Arizona Paving and Construction Co, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin fog sealing Fort Lowell Road from Oracle Road to Campbell Avenue. The following week, crews will work on Campbell Avenue from Benson Highway to Valencia Road. To minimize disruptions to motorists, the work will take place from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday, with at least one lane open in both directions.

Formed by the Mayor and City Council in March 1997, CPARB helps promote a citizen/police partnership and reviews and comments on police investigation of citizen complaints. You must be a resident of the City of Tucson to serve on the panel. For application information and other requirements, please follow the link below. The deadline to apply is Nov. 5.

Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair: Call for Vendors

Applications are available for artists who wish to participate in the Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair, Nov. 28-29. The event has been held for more than two decades, attracting vendors from all over the Southwest. The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department is seeking artists, crafters, photographers, painters, potters, jewelers, and more to sell their original artwork. All items must be handmade and are subject to approval.
