City Manager Selects Next Police Chief

After an extensive search, City Manager Michael Ortega has selected Richmond, California Police Chief Christopher Magnus as the Tucson Police Department’s new chief. The appointment will be made final if approved by the Mayor and City Council at tomorrow’s Regular Meeting.

Over the weekend, Dallas Deputy Chief Malik Aziz requested his name be withdrawn from consideration.

Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villaseñor is scheduled to retire in December, after 35 years with the Tucson Police Department.

TDOT Initiates Operation Freeze

Beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m. today, crews from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division will initiate Operation Freeze in preparation of freezing temperatures tonight. Operation Freeze is put into place to make sure City bridge decks are free of ice and safe for motorists to drive over.

Kolb Road: Connection to Sabino Canyon Road Pre-Construction Public Open House

The public is invited to attend a public open house for Kolb Road: Connection to Sabino Canyon Road. This project is part of the $2.1 billion, 20-year Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan that was approved by voters in May 2006.

The purpose of the meeting is to introduce the contractor, provide information and answer questions regarding the project’s construction.

New Building Permit Requirement

State law requires that all permitted work on commercial properties, residential rentals, and properties for sale must be done by a licensed contractor.

Effective December 1st, 2015, a letter from the licensed contractor stating their affiliation with the project must be provided to the Permit Counter prior to the issuance of the permit.  The letter must include: permit activity number, project address, contractor ROC, phone number and contact address. Letters may be emailed to COTDSDPermits@Tucsonaz.gov or faxed to 520-791-4475.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Tomorrow

Do you have unused chemicals, oils, or pesticides sitting in your shed or garage? The City of Tucson is hosting its 2nd Saturday Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection tomorrow. The collection location is at City of Tucson Community Services, 325 N. Commerce Park Loop, 8 a.m.-noon.

Accepted materials include automotive fluids, rechargeable batteries from electronics equipment, toxic cleaning products, fluorescent lamps, paints, solvents, and lawn and garden products.

Grant Road - Stone Avenue to Fontana Avenue

Underground utility work being conducted by Century Link associated with the Grant Road Widening Project will require eastbound travel lane closures on Grant Road from Stone Avenue to Fontana Avenue. 

The single, eastbound travel lane closure will take place nightly from 8 p.m. to noon the following day. The travel lane restrictions will be in place from Thursday, November 12, 2015 through Friday, November 13, 2015.
