Nature play starts this Sunday at Reid Park Zoo, followed by the same format every Sunday in February. From 1-3 p.m., the Zoo will have a free-play area set up near the Conservation Learning Center for kids to dig, build, splash, and more. Sand pits, water tables, building blocks, and tools will be provided. Children just need to bring their curiosity and imagination.
SCHEDULED STREET CLOSURE FOR CRANE OPERATIONS CANCELLED
Sixth Avenue from Sixth Street to Seventh Street has reopened to two way travel following work yesterday to remove storm water from a utility trench just north of Seventh Street. Work crews from Century Link continue to relocate their existing facilities at this location as part of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation's Downtown Links Phase III project.
The Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase is happening at more than 40 sites, and most shows are free and open to the public. The shows run until Feb. 14, culminating with the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show® opening on the 11th. That event packs the Tucson Convention Center for the final four days of shows, pulling in thousands of treasure hunters from around the world.
Starting Friday, the City of Tucson Environmental Services (ES) department will unveil and begin delivery of five metal waste collection containers painted with murals as part of an effort to reduce graffiti. ES contracted with the Tucson Arts Brigade to coordinate the project. Additional funding was provided by the Graffiti Resource Council in Washington, D.C.
Cesar Millan, original host of NatGeo WILD’s Dog Whisperer series and star of Cesar 911 on the same network, will reveal the secrets of happier, healthier relationships between humans and their dogs during a live show this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Tucson Music Hall. Millan will share his training secrets using demonstrations with multiple dogs.
The Sun Rideshare Rewards Program continues this month, offering the chance to win prizes for motorists who decide to use alternative modes of transportation (carpool, public transit, bikes, walking, etc.) once in a while. Sixth Avenue from Sixth Street to Seventh Street will be closed to motor vehicle traffic until further notice to allow work crews to pump out storm water from a utility trench just north of Seventh Street. Northbound traffic from the Sixth Avenue underpass is being diverted to eastbound and westbound Seventh Street. Southbound travel on Sixth Avenue from Sixth Street is prohibited.
Pedestrian access on Sixth Avenue is not affected by the closure. Businesses adjacent to Sixth Avenue are open with parking available on Seventh Street.
Sunday at 10 p.m. is the deadline for Tucsonans and the rest of the country to purchase health insurance and avoid hundreds of dollars in fines from the IRS.
The Marketplace, created by the Affordable Care Act, sells private insurance to individuals and families who aren't insured through their employers or a government program.
Money from the voter-approved, $100 million, five-year Road Recovery street bond program in 2012 already has improved more than 131 miles of roadway, and work continues to improve additional streets.
The bond money pays for repaving, while the bigger widening projects are funded by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), a 20-year program approved by voters in 2006.
Monday is the last day to vote for the four current and retired firefighters from the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) who hope to compete against other firefighters across the country for an opportunity to perform at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis during the Fire Department Instructor Conference in April.
