Tomorrow's the day mermaids, pirates, jellyfish, and other sea creatures will be washed ashore on downtown's pop-up beach on the MLK Lot at North Fifth Avenue at East Congress Street, and at Fourth Avenue’s Haggerty Plaza, 316 N. Fourth Ave. The "Return of the Mermaids" event begins with a mermaid arts market at 11 a.m. at 50 N. Fifth Ave. There will be music, dancing, and artists showcasing a variety of mermaid artwork and accessories.

Ride the Sun Link streetcar and enjoy the KXCI Presents: Sun Link Summer in the City Concert Series, a live concert inside a streetcar. The series features concerts through the end of the month. The next concert will take place tomorrow night, featuring music from Laura and the Killed Men. Passengers can attend the concert by boarding the streetcar at the stop at Avenida del Convento and Congress (across from Mercado San Agustin) at 7 p.m.

The Tucson City Council last night approved a land development incentive package for shuttered schools in the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). The incentives are designed to fast-track development by offering deferred building permit fees and expedited reviews of building plans. Eight schools remain closed and would qualify for the incentives.

Comcast officially signed the lease on the former American Home Furnishings building near Tucson Mall to house the media company's new call center, IT, and Spanish-language social media operations. The company says it plans to add 1,125 jobs in May. Renovation of the facility is expected to start immediately.

Visit Expedition Tanzania this Sunday for an early World Elephant Day celebration at Reid Park Zoo. From 8:30-10:30 a.m., the Zoo will host elephant-themed activities and presentations. The elephants will receive special treats and take part in training sessions viewable by guests. Activities are free with regular Zoo admission. Also, you can celebrate elephants again on Wednesday, Aug.

The City of Tucson will open its court building on Saturday, giving people a weekend day to clear up outstanding warrants. There will be two courtrooms available at Tucson City Court, 103 East Alameda, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal of Warrant Day is to resolve the warrant and possibly close cases in warrant status. If you want to see if you have a warrant, you can check online.

As Sun Tran officials and representatives of Teamsters Local 104 continue to negotiate a new contract, the current contract extension is set to expire at 11:59 tonight. In the event of a work stoppage, Sun Tran will offer limited weekday service from approximately 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Routes 3, 8, 11, 16, and 18. Reid Park Zoo is hosting a special breakfast event on Aug. 20 at 7 a.m. to celebrate Nandi's first birthday, and tickets to the private party sold out fast. If you still want to watch Nandi celebrate her birthday and couldn't get tickets on time, there will be a public party on Aug. 22, beginning at 8 a.m. Watch Nandi get more birthday treats, and you can sign a card, sing Happy Birthday, and chat with Zoo staff about Nandi’s first year. An apartment fire in the 2200 block of North Ralph Avenue (near Grant Road and Columbus Boulevard) displaced two residents yesterday after a fire started on the balcony due to an improperly discarded cigarette. Two dogs that lived in the apartment were taken out by firefighters and are okay. The two apartment residents, a male and female, weren't home at the time of the fire.
