City Council to Hold Public Hearing Tonight on Southeast Side Grocery Store

The public will get a chance to weigh-in tonight on the proposed development of a 124,000-square-foot Fry’s Marketplace grocery store on a 16-acre site at the northeast corner of South Houghton Road and East 22nd Street. The development also would have a 9,300-square-foot, nine-pump gas station and two separate retail or restaurant buildings of 12,900 and 4,500 square feet.

The Houghton East Neighborhood Plan says buildings at the site can't be taller than 20 feet, but Brentwood Development is asking for the rules to be changed to allow for 26 feet.

City of Tucson Could Continue to Provide Trash and Recycling Services to South Tucson

About 1,300 residents of the 1.2-square-mile City of South Tucson would get their trash and recycling collected by the City of Tucson's Environmental Services department under an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) up for adoption tonight by the Mayor and Tucson City Council. Tucson has been providing service on an emergency basis after Waste Management stopped service last fall following a dispute over unpaid bills to the private company, but Tucson would become the official service provider as of April 1.

Tucson Fire Department Stresses ABCs of Drowning Prevention

After two near drownings and one drowning in city limits in 11 days, the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) is again stressing its safety message of the ABCs of drowning prevention. "A" is for adult supervision. Watch children at all times. "B" is for barriers. Have a fence that encloses the pool or spa and make sure the gates close and latch automatically. "C" is for CPR. Knowing CPR allows the parent or nearby person to be a first responder.

Toole Avenue - Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue

Beginning Wednesday, March 9, 2016 through Thursday, March 24, 2016, Toole Avenue from Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue will be reduced to one travel lane between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday nights through Thursday nights. Crews from Day's Excavating, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will install underground electrical conduit and landscape sleeving during the travel lane restrictions. Flaggers will help direct motorists through the work zone. On Friday and Saturday nights two-way travel will be allowed on this section of Toole Avenue.

TFD Transports Baby after baby submerged in bath

Tucson Fire paramedics transported a nine month old baby to a local hospital after the baby was left in a bathtub unsupervised.  The baby was placed in the tub with the water running when the mother left the bathroom.  It is unknown how long the mother was gone but the bathtub was overflowing when the mother returned and the baby was basically flailing in the water.  The baby vomited several times as she was being assessed by TFD personnel.  CPR was not performed on scene as the baby did have pulses but the baby was lethargic.   Paramedics transported the baby girl to the hospital for furth

Tucson ranks No. 73 on U.S. News & World Report's 2016 list of the 100 "Best Places to Live in the USA." The rankings consider the job market, affordability, and overall quality of life, such as access to health care, quality of education, and crime rates.

"Tucson is an example of how a city can be constantly transforming without losing sight of its roots," U.S. News reported.

Roadwork This Week to Close Sections of Roadway

The Houghton Road/22nd Street intersection will be closed for a couple of hours tomorrow to allow work crews to relocate traffic signals. Traffic will be shifted to the west side of the roadway. Work hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The complete two-hour closure of the intersection is scheduled to take place sometime within those work hours. Tucson Police Department officers will direct travel at the intersection during the work.

Valencia Road/Palo Verde Road Intersection - Tucson Electric Power Work

On Monday, March 7, 2016, Tucson Police officers will direct travel through the Valencia Road and Palo Verde Road intersection to allow Tucson Electric Power Co. crews to perform electrical maintenance. The traffic signals at the intersection will be out of operation from approximately 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please obey all traffic control signs and watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work area. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather.

Houghton Road and 22nd Street Intersection Closure

On Tuesday, March 8, 2016, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and Borderland Construction will temporarily close the Houghton Road and 22nd Street intersection to allow work crews to relocate traffic signals and shift traffic to the west side of the roadway.

Work hours for the traffic signal relocation and traffic shift will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The complete closure of the intersection is scheduled to take place between the above work hours for approximately two hours.

Tucson Police officers will direct travel at the intersection during the work.
