The Arizona Senate last week sent a memorial to Congress, urging it to stop plans to shut down the Cherrybell mail processing facility in Tucson. The Postal Service wants to close the center as a cost-saving measure.
Many in Tucson are protesting the move that would force all mail to go to Phoenix for processing. Tucson City Council Member Richard Fimbres, U.S. Rep Raúl Grijalva, and U.S. Rep. Martha McSally are among a large group of local, state, and federal officials leading the fight against closure.
The Tucson mail processing center had been scheduled for closure last summer, but the Postal Service delayed that decision for further review.
