Beat Back Buffelgrass Month takes place Jan. 27-March. 4, and volunteers are needed and welcome. The rapid spread of buffelgrass, an invasive species, has introduced a new wildfire risk to our desert ecosystem. Buffelgrass grows in dense stands, crowds out native plants, and negatively affects wildlife and wildlife habitat.
For the last several years, a number of agencies, including Tucson Clean & Beautiful and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, partnered to organize volunteer events to remove buffelgrass at a number of locations in Pima County. Sites this year include Sentinel Peak (“A” Mountain), Saguaro National Park, Tucson Mountain Park, Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, and Catalina State Park.
You can also host a buffelgrass removal project in your neighborhood.
