Invitations to respond to the 2020 Census will be delivered between March 12-20. Once an invitation is received, people can respond online, by phone, or by mail to state where they live as of April 1, 2020.
During April, census takers will visit those who live among large groups of people and begin conducting quality check interviews to help ensure an accurate count. From May to July, census takers will visit homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to help make sure everyone is counted.
When people respond to the census, their answers are kept anonymous and are used only to produce statistics. The census takes place once every 10 years. Responses help determine the number of seats each state has in Congress and guide how nearly $700 billion in federal funding is spent in communities each year.
