City Council Moves Forward on Broadway Widening

The Mayor and Tucson City Council last night voted 5-1 to proceed with funding and acquisition of properties along Broadway Boulevard, east of downtown, for a future road widening project funded mostly by the Regional Transportation Authority.

The project to widen Broadway to six lanes between Euclid Avenue and Country Club Road would result in 27 demolitions, including some buildings opponents say contribute to the historic status of surrounding neighborhoods. Proponents say it's time to move forward in the widening that has been delayed for many years.

Construction is expected to begin in 2018.

Council Member Steve Kozachik was the only one to vote against moving ahead with the plan, while Council Member Regina Romero was absent from the meeting due to a family emergency.
