Hockey Vote Scheduled for Tonight

The Mayor and Tucson City Council tonight is set to vote on a 10-year license agreement between a proposed new hockey team and the Tucson Convention Center (TCC).

The agreement includes provisions for the City and Rio Nuevo to get some taxpayer money back if the team leaves early. Under the terms of the proposed agreement, the team would pay the city $300,000 per year to use the TCC, and the amount would be adjusted each year for inflation.

With two of three required approvals already granted, the agreement is the final piece needed for the Arizona Coyotes to buy the minor league Springfield Falcons and move the team to Tucson. The American Hockey League's governing board already approved the sale, and Rio Nuevo recently committed to spend $3.2 million for arena upgrades.
