January 8th Memorial Gets Financial Boost

The January 8th Memorial Foundation announced yesterday that Raytheon and other major donors will match contributions up to $1 million to help fund construction of the memorial to honor victims of the Jan. 8, 2011 shootings in Tucson that left six dead and injured 13 others, including former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Even if the foundation gets the entire match by January, it will still be a bit short of the $4.5 million needed, but it will have enough money to start building the memorial.

Construction of the memorial in El Presidio Park downtown is part of a public/private partnership between Tucson's January 8th Memorial Foundation, Pima County, and the City of Tucson. Supporters hope to begin construction sometime next spring.
