Mayor and Council Considers Naming Solar Array After Former Council Member

The Tucson City Council is proposing the commemorative naming of the Central Avra Valley Storage and Recovery Project (CAVSARP) solar array after former Ward 5 Tucson City Council Member Steve Leal, a strong advocate for the expanded use of alternative energy sources.

In 2006, Leal led the effort to pursue a feasibility study for solar farm operations on Tucson Water property in Avra Valley. Leal’s vision of providing the energy requirements for City of Tucson operations through solar led directly to the construction and operation of the CAVSARP solar array.

Comments about the proposal should be sent to Tucson Water at pico@tucsonaz.gov by Jan. 29. Mayor and Council will review all comments and consider the proposal on Feb. 9.
