Cell 4A, a new waste disposal area, is now open at the Los Reales Landfill, 5300 E. Los Reales Road. Construction of Cell 4A began in March 2019 at a cost of $3.2 million. It is expected to last five-to-six years and will hold approximately 3.35 million tons of waste. It covers an area of 12 acres.
The Los Reales Landfill opened in 1967 and is expected to be active for another 70 years. It serves the City of Tucson as well as much of Pima County and is used by hundreds of self-haulers each day. Each year, more than 700,000 tons of trash is disposed of at the landfill.
