A new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) crosswalk has been installed at Sunnyside High School on Bilby Road, just west of Campbell Avenue, to improve pedestrian safety. The project was spearheaded by student council members who worked with Vice Mayor Richard Fimbres (Ward 5) and the Tucson Department of Transportation to complete the project within two months.
"This crosswalk will be a pilot program and will be monitored for its effectiveness,” Fimbres said. The RRFB crosswalk cost $28,000, approximately six times less than a standard HAWK that costs $175,000, and transportation officials say it can reduce accidents by 60 percent.
