Sun Tran to Provide Limited Saturday Bus Service

Beginning this weekend, Sun Tran will provide limited Saturday bus service from approximately 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Routes 8, 16, and 18. Limited service maps and schedules are available at transit centers, Sun Tran's website, or by calling Customer Service at (520) 792-9222. Passengers are strongly encouraged to check schedules. Riders are advised to plan accordingly, as buses may be delayed due to overcrowding. As more resources become available, Sun Tran will continue add more service.
 

Houghton Road Project Named Public Works Project of the Year

The American Public Works Association (APWA) announced this week that the Houghton Road - Irvington Road to Valencia Road Project has been selected as one of the nation's Public Works Projects of the Year for 2015. The award will be presented next Monday in Phoenix. Award recipients include the City of Tucson as the managing agency, Hunter Contracting Co. as the primary contractor, Psomas as the primary design consultant, and Gordley Group as the public relations firm.

Application Deadline for a New Police Chief Nears

Monday is the last day for candidates to apply for the position of Tucson Police Chief. The City is seeking a proven leader who can inspire the confidence of the community and police officers. The successful candidate will be committed to using current data-driven policing strategies and applying the principles of community policing to reduce crime and deliver a high level of police services.

Update: City Reaches Agreement with AFSCME Members

The City of Tucson's Human Resources department, with the assistance of a federal mediator, last night reached a new labor agreement with AFSCME Local 449. The previous agreement expired on Monday after the Mayor and Tucson City Council issued a 60-day continuance in June. The two-year agreement will go to Mayor and Council for ratification next month. AFSCME represents 692 city workers, of which 229 are members.

Sun Tran General Manager Kate Riley issued an open letter to the community regarding the current bus strike. Riley said Sun Tran is working to expand the current limited service for major routes. Nine routes are running 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. "I do personally apologize for the difficult burden this has placed on all of our riders," she said. "Rest assured, we will continue to work with the federal mediator to get back to the table and resolve this issue."

Summer Movies Program Concludes at La Placita Village Downtown

Cinema La Placita wraps up its weekly summer movies series tomorrow night at 7:30 (weather permitting). Hundreds of Tucsonans each summer enjoy a different movie outdoors for $3 per person (includes all-you-can-eat popcorn). The final movie for 2015 is Best in Show (2000), starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey, Eugene Levy, and Fred Willard. La Placita Village is located at 110 S. Church Ave., on the southwest corner of Broadway and Church in Downtown Tucson.

Partnership Between Uber and University of Arizona Announced

At this morning's news conference, the app-driven ride service Uber announced that it will be partnering with the University of Arizona to help develop mapping technology for self-driving cars. Arizona dignitaries, including Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Gov. Doug Ducey, were on hand to announce the partnership, which includes $25,000 for the College of Optical Science to develop new lens technology. Headquartered in San Francisco, Uber service is available in 58 countries and 300 cities. Read more from Tucson News Now.
