SUN LINK WELCOMES ONE MILLIONTH PASSENGER - Just about two months from celebrating its first anniversary, the Sun Link streetcar today welcomed its one millionth passenger. With great fanfare, University of Arizona student Anna Bjornsen was welcomed on board by dignitaries and presented gifts, including a new SunGO annual pass (available to the public in August) and a Summer in the City discount card. The card entitles the holder to discounts at many food, lifestyle, and entertainment establishments in Tucson. Passengers on board the streetcar during the one millionth rider celebration also received gift bags. Sun Link is experiencing higher-than-expected ridership numbers during its first year of service. The streetcar's first anniversary is July 25.
TUCSON CITY COUNCIL APPROVES WATER RATE INCREASE - The Mayor and Tucson City Council this week approved a rate increase for Tucson Water. That means overall monthly rates will increase by $4.13 for the average residential customer. The new rate schedule becomes effective July 6. Tucson Water is a self-supporting department of the City of Tucson. Its rates and fees must cover all costs associated with delivering quality water to the 712,000 customers within its service area. SUMMER SAFARI NIGHTS PROGRAM BEGINS TOMORROW AT REID PARK ZOO - Enjoy Reid Park Zoo and cooler evening temperatures at a series of themed nights featuring different zookeeper chats, animal encounters, artifact stations, enrichment-making activities, crafts, and scavenger hunts. The event runs every Friday, from 5:30-8 p.m., through July 10. The bands and animal themes will change each week. Tomorrow's theme is Scales and Feathers, featuring reptiles and birds. It's also Military Appreciation Night, with active military personnel admitted free with military identification. Tickets for the general public can be purchased at the gate or online.
TREO TO CHANGE NAME TO SUN CORRIDOR, INC. - Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, Inc. (TREO) announced Tuesday that it is changing its name to Sun Corridor, Inc. and expanding its work to encompass more of Southern Arizona. Formed in 2005, TREO supports economic development in the region by providing programs and services that support the creation of new businesses and expansion of existing businesses. By expanding its footprint, TREO/Sun Corridor leaders hope to leverage Mexico's economic growth and create a strong binational position with Arizona's largest trading partner. Read the news release.
