Reid Park Zoo is getting a couple of winter visitors. The highly endangered red pandas are expected to reside at the Zoo from November through March. The two red pandas will spend time in Tucson while their permanent habitat in Utah is being prepared.
Red pandas, which aren't related to giant pandas, are native to China, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. They weigh between 7 and 13 pounds, and 95 percent of their diet is made up of bamboo. They drink water daily and also eat fruit, roots, grasses, bird eggs, lichens, and insects.
The temporary red panda exhibit is funded by the Tucson Parks Foundation.
