Reid Park Acorns Are Herbalist's Treasure

Tucson herbalist John Slattery, owner of Desert Tortoise Botanicals, finds food all around Tucson, including fallen acorns at Reid Park. He's been studying acorns for the past several years, and he says there's a misconception that the nutrient-rich nut is poisonous. Slattery says a few raw acorns may not hurt you, but he has a special method of preparation to make them safer and more pleasant to eat by grinding them into flour and soaking out the bitter tannins found in the nut.

The Arizona Daily Star recently published a story and video with Slattery showing how he harvests acorns from Reid Park and turns them into food.
