Reid Park Zoo over the weekend announced the death of Baheem, an 18-year-old Malayan tiger. He started to develop conditions such as arthritis and chronic kidney disease over the last few years, and in recent months he had developed pancreatic insufficiency and chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
All of these diseases are common in older cats, and Baheem was a geriatric tiger, having lived two years past the median life expectancy for his species. He was humanely euthanized on Friday, Jan. 31, after his health started to decline and his appetite decreased. His health exam confirmed ongoing arthritis, kidney disease, pancreatic insufficiency, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, valley fever, and a greatly enlarged spleen.
Baheem's female companion Sita, who also turned 18 last spring, can still be seen at the Zoo.
