The famous horse trainer of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is featured prominently in a New York Times article that also showcases Pima County's Rillito Racetrack. Bob Baffert got his start at the track, working as a jockey.
"Rillito Park was the big time for me,” he told the Times. “I first went there when I was 10 years old to run a few horses with my dad."
Now 64 years old, Baffert said he began training horses as a hobby, but mostly he was at Rillito Racetrack to listen to the old-timers tell stories.
“I owe Rillito Park," he said. "One of these days, I’m going to run another horse there."
