San Xavier Mission Graffiti Vandals Still Being Sought

The Tohono O'Odham Nation Police Department is still looking for the vandals responsible for spraying graffiti on several walls and structures at the historic Mission San Xavier del Bac. While the interior of the church was unaffected, vandals damaged the mission's lime-mortar walls, the courtyard walls, a sidewalk, and a nearby tribal cemetery. The vandalism was discovered early yesterday morning.

Work crews and volunteers spent much of yesterday removing the graffiti, but some areas will need to be replastered. Mission San Xavier del Bac was built between 1783 and 1797. It is designated a National Historic Landmark and is known for its Spanish Colonial architecture in a Baroque style.
