Sun Tran to Start Service of First Electric Bus Sunday

Sun Tran will introduce its first electric bus into service starting Sunday, May 17. The electric bus is powered only by battery and produces zero-emissions, contributing to cleaner and healthier air in Tucson. In addition, it provides a quieter and more comfortable ride for passengers.

Sun Tran has purchased and expects to receive five additional electric buses later this year, paid for with funding awarded by the Federal Transit Administration’s Low-No Emission Grant program. Tucson Electric Power upgraded Sun Tran’s electrical system and installed a new bus charging system at no cost to Sun Tran.

Since 2006, 100 percent of Sun Tran’s fleet is powered by clean fuel technology. This fleet currently runs on biodiesel, compressed natural gas, and hybrid-electric power sources.
