Tucson Awarded Federal Grant to Hire More Firefighters

The Department of Homeland Security is awarding the Tucson Fire Department nearly $8.6 million through the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program. The funding will be used to hire 54 firefighters, replacing 41 firefighters lost through attrition and adding 13 new positions. The SAFER program was created to provide funding directly to fire departments, with a goal of enhancing the local fire departments’ abilities to comply with staffing, response, and operational standards.
