Employees of the Tucson Police Department (TPD) soon could be getting a $3,000 bonus if they refer a recruit who meets various stages in the hiring process. The bonus program must be approved by the Mayor and Tucson City Council, which is scheduled to discuss the plan at tonight's meeting.
City Manager Michael Ortega submitted the proposed change to the existing Police Officer Recruit Referral Compensation Program. The current program offers $200 to all City employees who refer a police recruit, once that person begins the police academy. That program would remain in effect, but the new plan is only for current TPD employees. It includes a mandatory mentoring program, and the referral money would be paid in installments over 18 months as the recruit completes various other requirements in the hiring process.
