The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced the winners of its eighth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge and UArizona was awarded 2nd place in the Master Plan Category for its “Against the Grain” project. The university's project involved enhancing flood protection through bioretention facilities with native plants and trees and using stormwater runoff as a water resource.
A team of students and faculty advisers designed the on-campus green infrastructure solutions to help address stormwater pollution. The EPA challenge is a national competition.
On May 1, the City of Tucson implemented a new Green Stormwater Infrastructure fee on utility services statements to build and maintain projects that capture stormwater runoff from public streets and parking lots and divert it into vegetated water harvesting areas.
