Water Solar Facility to Be Named for Former Council Member

Former Ward 5 Tucson City Council Member Steve Leal will be honored with a dedication of the Central Avra Valley Storage and Recovery Project (CAVSARP) solar array facility. Hosted by the City of Tucson, the event will take place tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at El Presidio Park, east of City Hall.

Leal, who served Ward 5 from 1989-2009, was a strong advocate for the expanded use of alternative energy sources. In 2006, he led the effort to pursue a feasibility study for solar farm operations on Tucson Water property in Avra Valley. His vision of providing energy requirements for City government operations using solar led directly to construction and operation of the CAVSARP solar array. The facility offsets carbon emissions while providing power to store and recover Tucson’s Colorado River water supply.

A commemorative sign will be unveiled at the ceremony, and it later will be placed at CAVSARP in Avra Valley.
