22nd Street: I-10 to Kino Parkway Widening

This project, phase 3 of the 22nd Street project (RTA# 19) is expected to advance in the fourth period (FY 2021-2026) of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan schedule. This phase will follow the construction of the second phase of the 22nd Street project (Tucson Blvd to Kino Parkway), which is funded to start end of 2021. As the planning for this project gets underway, more information will be available at that time.

Description

The 22nd Street Corridor Improvements from Interstate 10 (I-10) to Tucson Boulevard will add one new travel lane in each direction, bridges over the railroad tracks, and intersection improvements along 22nd Street to promote mobility, capacity, and safety. It will create new roadway and streetscape designs, guide future land use decisions, enhance environmental and economic sustainability, and improve mobility for vehicles, transit, bicycles, and pedestrians. Special consideration will also be given to ADA accessibility.

The study and design of 22nd Street, from I-10 to Tucson Boulevard, is occurring in two sections:

  1. The planning for the Kino Parkway/22nd Street Interchange and the widening of 22nd Street, from Kino Parkway east to Tucson Boulevard, have been under way for more than a year.
  2. 22nd Street, from I-10 to Kino Parkway - Phase One, is just getting under way with visits to neighborhood associations, businesses, and community leaders to listen to suggestions and concerns and discuss opportunities within the corridor. The planning area is 1/4 mile north and south of 22nd Street, between I-10 to Kino Parkway.

The planning and design for this Corridor is expected to be completed by 2010. The construction is currently planned for the fourth phase of the RTA regional transportation plan (2022-2026).
