Centurylink to Begin Utility Relocation Work for Downtown Links Phase III Project

As part of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation's Downtown Links Phase III project, CenturyLink will begin relocating their existing facilities located within the project limits. The CenturyLink work will consist of relocating several existing underground vaults located within City of Tucson right of way, followed by a year of splicing fiber and copper communication lines which are housed in the new vaults.

The CenturyLink work will take place in an area bounded by Fourth Street on the north, Sixth Avenue on the east, Toole Avenue on the south and Ninth Avenue on the west.

The first phase of work, vault relocation, will require heavy construction and include road closures and lane restrictions.

  • Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 27, 2015 along Seventh Avenue between Fourth Street and Toole Avenue. Parking will not be permitted on Seventh Avenue between Fourth Street and Toole Avenue.
  • Access to businesses and residents will be maintained at all times.
  • Century Link work hours are from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Downtown Links Phase III – Church Avenue to Broadway – is funded by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), the City of Tucson and Pima County and is part of the voter-approved, $2.1 billion RTA plan that runs through 2026. The multimodal plan, nearly halfway through implementation, includes roadway, safety, transit, environmental and economic vitality improvements.

The Downtown Links Phase III project improvements include improved access and connections for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists, linking Barraza-Aviation Parkway and Interstate 10, and downtown with the neighborhoods to the north. The project also provides new and safer underpasses, overpasses and railroad crossings, drainage improvements, multi-use paths, improved sidewalks and bike lanes, and public art. For more information, call the Downtown Links Information Line at 622-9000. Details about the RTA plan are available at www.RTAmobility.com
