City Transportation Project Honored With Common Ground Award from Metropolitan Pima Alliance

The Houghton Road Corridor: Tanque Verde Road to Interstate 10 project was recognized with a Common Ground Award from the Metropolitan Pima Alliance (MPA) in a ceremony on Friday, October 30, 2015.

Houghton Road is a dynamic 13-mile-long regional thoroughfare with its roots in the rural Southwest. Not only does Houghton provide vital access to Interstate 10, it is of tremendous value as a scenic corridor with treasured environmental resources. The Tucson Department of Transportation and its partners were able to achieve a model level of collaboration while overcoming significant challenges of funding reversals and economic downturn, utilities conflicts, right-of-way acquisitions, jurisdictional differences and sensitive environmental concerns. The results are significant accomplishments in providing increased capacity, mobility and safety and an environmentally sustainable six-lane arterial roadway that will serve the region’s needs and honor its values for generations to come.

At its 11th annual Common Ground Awards ceremony, presented by Cox Communications, MPA honored community leaders, planning and development projects and community efforts that overcame great obstacles through collaboration. An elite list of 20 projects were chosen for recognition with 10 projects, including the Houghton Road Corridor, receiving Common Ground Awards. Awards were unveiled the evening of the ceremony at the Starr Pass Marriott, representing the best of the best.

Attended by hundreds, the event celebrated outstanding projects and programs countywide that represent exemplary community collaboration. Over 200 exemplary projects have been recognized by MPA over the past decade, representing positive outcomes as the result of atypical and significant partnerships.
