On Saturday, February 26, 2022, Choice Maintenance and Asphalt Services, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), is scheduled to crack seal Country Club Road from Broadway to Aviation Parkway as part of a cool pavement pilot project. This work is scheduled to take place between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day and be completed by Sunday, February 27. Crews recently applied the PlusTi™ asphalt rejuvenator treatment in December 2021.
One travel lane will be maintained in each direction on Country Club Road while crews apply the crack seal treatment onto the roadway.
The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
PlusTi™ asphalt rejuvenator is a solar-reflective top surface treatment designed to reduce roadway temperature and neutralize vehicle emissions. The treatment applies a Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) based emulsion that absorbs within minutes into the asphalt and works by reflecting the sun to prevent the pavement from heating up and oxidizes vehicular pollutants for cleaner air. Additionally, the application of the treatment does not change the appearance of the roadway and helps extend the life of the pavement.
As part of the pilot program, the City of Tucson has partnered with the University of Arizona College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA) to collect data on the performance of cool pavements and evaluate the potential benefits for mitigating urban heat island effects. Researchers from CAPLA will evaluate the cool pavement’s ability to:
- Reduce the urban heat island effect
- Lower surface temperature of the road
- Reflect the heat off the road without negatively impacting the ambient air temperature for other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders
- Advance climate change adaptation by using affordable, off-the-shelf instrumentation
This is the first cool pavement treatment to be applied in Tucson. The city is also part of a Global Cool Cities Alliance Cool Roadways Partnership to pilot this program. Cool pavements have been deployed in numerous cities across the nation, including Phoenix, Los Angeles, Orlando, and St. Petersburg.
