Fourth Avenue Access to Downtown Detour: Traffic Congestion to Determine Detour Times

There will be no set time when the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) will detour southbound motor vehicle traffic at the Fourth Avenue Underpass into Downtown on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20.

TDOT staff and Sun Link Streetcar staff will monitor traffic flows on Fourth Avenue into downtown and if congestion at the Congress Street/Fourth Avenue/Toole Avenue intersection affects streetcar operations a detour will go into effect. The detour schedule and detour time is being altered following several meetings between TDOT staff and area merchants and area residents.

The Sun Link Streetcar, bicyclists and pedestrians will not be affected by a southbound detour. As motorists approach the underpass, they will be detoured west to Stevens Avenue, then north on Fifth Avenue, then west on Seventh Street to Sixth Avenue. Motorists can then travel south on Sixth Avenue to access Downtown.

When a detour is in place, eastbound travel on Ninth Street at Fourth Avenue will be restricted to “local traffic only” to lessen the traffic impacts to the adjacent neighborhood. Business access signs will be in place to inform motorists that businesses along Ninth Street remain open.

Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling along Fourth Avenue and in the downtown area due to the high volume of pedestrian activity in these entertainment districts.
