On Sunday, June 7, 2015, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the Fourth Avenue Underpass will be closed to vehicular traffic as crews from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division reconstruct the median island at the north side of the underpass to install a remote controlled traffic gate for the southbound travel lane.
The traffic gate will replace barricades that have been used for intermittent, temporary closures of the southbound vehicular travel lane when traffic congestion downtown affected streetcar operations on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
On Monday, June 8, 2015 through Wednesday, June 10, 2015 the southbound lane of the Fourth Avenue underpass will be closed to vehicular traffic from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow crews to finish work on the traffic gate. The northbound travel lane in the underpass will be open to traffic. During the closures, bicyclists and pedestrians will have access through the underpass. The work is taking place when the Sun Link streetcar is not in operation.
During the closures, southbound motorists traveling downtown will be detoured west on Eighth Street, then north on Fifth Avenue, west on Seventh Street and south on Sixth Avenue to Downtown. Northbound motorists traveling to Fourth Avenue will be detoured west on Toole Avenue, north on Sixth Avenue and east on Seventh Street to Fourth Avenue. Local access will be provided to businesses south of Eighth Street on Fourth Avenue.
Motorists driving in the downtown area may experience traffic delays associated with this work. The traveling public should use caution when driving, bicycling or walking in the work area. Please obey all traffic control signs and watch for personnel and equipment in the work zone.
