The first layer of new asphalt, portions of new curb and sidewalk, as well as new underground utilities and other infrastructure work are complete on the south side of Grant Road from Stone Avenue to Hampton Street, just east of First Avenue.
Markham Contracting, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation, will now begin improvements on the north side of Grant Road from Stone Avenue to Park Avenue. To facilitate this work, at 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 4th eastbound and westbound travel on Grant Road from Stone Avenue to Hampton Street will be shifted to the newly constructed roadway and reduced to one lane in each direction.
The travel lane reduction for eastbound travel on Grant Road will begin east of Oracle Road. Left turns from Grant Road will be permitted only at Santa Rita Avenue, Park Avenue, Euclid Avenue, Sixth Avenue and Stone Avenue.
Temporary bus pullouts are in place to assist with the flow of traffic. The speed limit in the construction zone has been reduced to 25 mph and motorists can expect delays while traveling through the work zone. Please be cautious of equipment, construction personnel and police officers in the work areas. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
Work to widen Grant Road from Stone Avenue to Park Avenue began in March. The improvements include six vehicular travel lanes, protected bike/pedestrian street crossings, drainage improvements, indirect left turns at Stone Avenue and First Avenue, bike lanes and sidewalks, bus pullouts and bus shelters, and public art. The project is part of the $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Plan, which will be implemented through 2026.
