The delivery and installation of bridge girders for the new Houghton Road Bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) has been delayed by one day. Girders will now be delivered and installed on Thursday, November 9, 2017 and Friday, November 10, 2017, as well as on Monday, November 13, 2017 and Tuesday, November 14, 2017.
Motorists using Houghton Road, Rita Road, Mary Ann Cleveland Way and Old Vail Road are urged to use caution when traveling these roadways when the girders are delivered. Flaggers will be present to assist in the delivery of the bridge girders to the project site.
A total of 18 girders will be delivered and installed over the four-day period. Haul times will be 6 a.m. through 4 p.m. each day.
Girders being delivered to the south side of the project site will be hauled from Coolidge, Arizona on Interstate 10 to Interstate 19, eastbound on Sahuarita Road to northbound Houghton Road.
Girders being delivered to the north side of the project site will be hauled from Coolidge, Arizona on Interstate 10 to northbound Rita Road, eastbound on Old Vail Road to southbound Houghton Road.
The Houghton Road Widening project from Mary Ann Cleveland Way to the UPRR began in March and will increase bridge capacity over the railroad and will accommodate three lanes of traffic, as well as bike lanes and sidewalks in each direction. The bridge project will be constructed in two phases and is scheduled to be complete in summer 2018. This is part of the overall Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Plan to improve Houghton Road from Tanque Verde Road to Interstate 10.
The first phase of construction will keep both northbound and southbound traffic on the existing Houghton Road two-lane bridge, while the new three-lane bridge is constructed to the east of the existing bridge. Once the new bridge is complete, northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to the new bridge. The second phase will include demolishing the existing two-lane bridge and building a three-lane bridge where the old bridge was located. During construction, at least one lane of travel will be maintained in each direction.
This project is federally funded along with major contributions from the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and Pima County. The project is part of the $2.1 billion RTA plan, which will be implemented through 2026. The multimodal plan, nearly halfway through implementation, includes roadway, safety, transit, environmental and economic vitality improvements.
