The Ashton Company, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), has started the application of the final two layers of new asphalt at the Kino Parkway and 22nd Street intersection.
Crews are working Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The final paving on 22nd Street is scheduled to be complete by Friday, April 24, 2015. The final two layers of asphalt paving on Kino Parkway is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 13, 2015 and is scheduled to be complete by Friday, May 8, 2015.
When crews are paving, there will be only one travel lane available to motorists in each direction. Motorists can expect delays when traveling in the work zone. Side streets and driveways intersecting with both Kino Parkway and 22nd Street will be temporarily closed when paving work is taking place at those locations. It is anticipated that those streets and driveways will reopen within one hour following the paving work taking place to allow the new paving to properly cure.
This project is part of the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA)-funded Kino Boulevard and 22nd Street Intersection Improvement Project.
The project reconstructed the intersection of Kino Parkway and 22nd Street by elevating Kino Parkway over 22nd Street to provide two continuous through lanes of traffic in each direction. On and off ramps have one left turn and one right turn lane for drivers wishing to enter and exit Kino Parkway. 22nd Street was widened to provide three through lanes in each direction, exclusive right turn lanes, and dual left turn lanes. When restriped, both roads will have bike lanes and a landscaped center median separating the traffic lanes.
The voter-approved, $2.1 billion RTA plan will be implemented through 2026. Details about the full plan are available at www.RTAmobility.com. The RTA has a nine-member board with representatives from local, state and tribal governments.
