On Monday, January 5, 2015, Southern Arizona Paving and Construction Co., under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin work to improve Sixth Avenue between Seventh Street and Broadway. The project will begin with crews installing sewer bypass pumps at the Toole Avenue and Sixth Avenue intersection. This work will result in the intersection being closed nightly to vehicular traffic beginning on Monday, January 5, 2015 through Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.
Once the intersection reopens, crews will begin making improvements to finalize the two-way conversion of Sixth Avenue from Seventh Street to Broadway. The work includes new traffic signals, sidewalks and ADA accessible ramps at the intersections of Sixth Avenue and Toole Avenue and Sixth Avenue and Pennington Street, new pavement, new striping and new signage along Sixth Avenue from Toole Avenue to Broadway. The project is being funded by the Federal Transit Administration.
Crews will work Monday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to minimize the impact to the traveling public. Construction is scheduled to be complete in late March 2015. Temporary travel lane restrictions may be in place during the work.
Access to adjacent businesses and the Ronstadt Transit Center will be maintained throughout the project.
The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling and walking in the work area. Please obey all traffic control signs and watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.
