On Saturday, October 11, 2014, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) will close southbound Fourth Avenue to vehicular travel from Second Street to Eighth Street beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the annual Pride on Parade. This stretch of roadway is scheduled to reopen at approximately 7 p.m., at the completion of the parade.
At 7 p.m., southbound vehicular travel through the Fourth Avenue Underpass into Downtown will be detoured to Stevens Avenue as TDOT staff anticipates a high number of motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic associated with several downtown and Fourth Avenue civic events, as well as the University of Arizona home football game.
Southbound vehicular travel through the Fourth Avenue Underpass will be allowed when congestion through the underpass no longer affects Sun Link Streetcar operations.
When a detour is in effect, the Sun Link Streetcar, bicyclists and pedestrians will be allowed to travel southbound through the Fourth Avenue Underpass. Northbound travel through the underpass will not be affected when a detour is in place. During a detour, motorists will be directed west on Stevens Avenue, then north on Fifth Avenue, then west on Seventh Street to Sixth Avenue. Motorists can then travel south on Sixth Avenue to access Downtown.
When a detour is in place, eastbound travel on Ninth Street at Fourth Avenue will be restricted to “local traffic only” to lessen the traffic impacts to the adjacent neighborhood. Business access signs will be in place to inform motorists that businesses along Ninth Street remain open.
Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling along Fourth Avenue and in the downtown area due to the high volume of pedestrian activity in these entertainment districts.
