Stone Avenue Closure - Helen Street to First Street

To expedite the completion of the reconstruction of the Speedway Boulevard and Stone Avenue intersection, Stone Avenue will be closed to travel from Helen Street to First Street beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2016.

Upon closing Stone Avenue, southbound motorists will be detoured east on Helen Street, south on Sixth Avenue through Speedway Boulevard, west on First Street to Stone Avenue. Northbound motorists will be detoured east on First Street, north on Sixth Avenue through Speedway Boulevard and west on Helen Street to Stone Avenue.

Stone Avenue is scheduled to reopen Monday night, August 22, 2016. This schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather.

The intersection work is part of the Stone Avenue – Drachman Street to First Street Roadway Improvement Project that began on June 2016. Improvements include new underground water lines and landscape irrigation, as well as a new underground drainage structure at Stone Avenue and Mabel Street. The project will also include new median islands, curbs, sidewalks with curb access ramps, driveways, street lighting, traffic signals, bus pullouts and a new asphalt roadway. The project is scheduled to be complete in April 2017.

The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling or walking in this work area. Please obey all traffic control signs and watch for construction personnel and equipment in the work zone.

The construction cost of the project is $2.5 million and was made possible by the voter-approved $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Plan that will be implemented through 2026. The multimodal plan, nearly halfway through implementation, includes roadway, safety, transit, environmental and economic vitality improvements.  For more information on the RTA Plan, visit http://www.rtamobility.com/
