On Tuesday, July 5, 2016, crews from KE&G Construction, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) will begin work on Speedway Boulevard at Stone Avenue as part of the Stone Avenue, Drachman Street to First Street Roadway Improvement Project. Crews will be saw cutting concrete across Speedway Boulevard during the hours of 5 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. During this work, travel lane restrictions will be in place. At least one travel lane in each direction will be maintained during the work, which will take place intermittently over the next two months.
The Stone Avenue – Drachman Street to First Street Roadway Improvement Project will include new underground water lines and landscape irrigation, as well as a new underground drainage structure at Stone Avenue and Mabel Street. The project will also include new median islands, curbs, sidewalks with curb access ramps, driveways, street lighting, traffic signals, bus pullouts and a new asphalt roadway. The project is scheduled to be complete in April 2017.
The traveling public can expect delays when driving, bicycling and walking in the work area. Please obey all traffic control signs and watch for construction personnel and equipment in these work areas. The schedule is subject to change due to equipment malfunction or inclement weather.
The construction cost of the project is $2.5 million and was made possible by the voter-approved $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Plan that will be implemented through 2026. The multimodal plan, nearly halfway through implementation, includes roadway, safety, transit, environmental and economic vitality improvements.
