On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, crews from Intermountain Slurry Seal, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), will begin milling (removing asphalt) and repaving Third Street between Campbell Avenue and Tucson Boulevard.
Third Street will be closed to all through traffic on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 for the milling work and on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 for the repaving work. The closures on both days will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In between the milling and repaving work, crews will crack seal and patch the milled roadway. This work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with periodic travel lane restrictions. Following the repaving work, crews will adjust manhole covers and water valve covers flush with the new asphalt. This work is scheduled to be complete by Monday, June 1, 2015.
Third Street is a popular bikeway through Tucson and therefore, the City of Tucson has created a bicycle detour to help cyclists get around the street closure and milled roadway. Eastbound cyclists will be directed to Hawthorne Street, one block north of Third Street. West bound cyclists will be directed to Fourth Street, one block south of Third Street (see attached map). The bicycle detour will be in effect during the milling, crack sealing and paving work, through Thursday, May 28, 2015.
This pavement improvement project is part of the $100 million, five-year street bond program – Road Recovery. The Road Recovery program is funded by voter-approved bonds.
Please obey all traffic control signs and watch for construction personnel and equipment in these work areas. The schedule is subject to change due to equipment malfunction or inclement weather.
