Traffic Alert - Grant Road Improvement Project Phase II Stone to Park - Southbound Stone Avenue Weekend Closure at Grant Road Through Travel Prohibited at Grant Road

Through travel on Stone Avenue at Grant Road will be prohibited beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 through 4 a.m. on Monday, October 16, 2017.

Southbound Stone Avenue will be closed at Glenn Street. No through traffic will be permitted at the Grant Road intersection. The designated detour route for southbound traffic will be eastbound and westbound on Glenn Street; however, local traffic needing access to residents and businesses in the area will be permitted to travel south on Stone Avenue to Alturus Street.

Northbound Stone Avenue through traffic at the Grant Road intersection will not be permitted. Motorists will be required to turn east or west at the Grant Road intersection. The designated detour route for northbound through will be eastbound and westbound on Drachman Street.

The closure will allow crews from Markham Contracting, under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT), to install an underground storm drain system at the intersection, as well as new water lines and new manholes.

Eastbound and westbound travel on Grant Road at Stone Avenue will be permitted, but travel is reduced to one-lane in each direction from east of Oracle to just east of First Avenue. Left turns in the construction zone are allowed only at signalized intersections except for north on Stone Avenue during the weekend closure. Tucson Police officers will be on site to help direct traffic if necessary. Pedestrians are urged to avoid crossing at the Grant Road and Stone Avenue intersection during this weekend closure. For safety considerations, bicyclists should avoid the construction area.

TDOT and Markham Contracting also anticipate working in the Grant Road and Stone Avenue intersection the weekend of October 20, 2017 – more detailed traffic information will be issued next week.

Work to widen Grant Road from Stone Avenue to Park Avenue began in March. The improvements include six vehicular travel lanes, protected bike/pedestrian street crossings, drainage improvements, indirect left turns at Stone Avenue and First Avenue, bike lanes and sidewalks, bus pullouts and bus shelters, and public art. The project is part of the $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Plan, which will be implemented through 2026. The multimodal plan, nearly halfway through implementation, includes roadway, safety, transit, environmental and economic vitality improvements. This project is managed by the City of Tucson. Details about the RTA plan are available at
