December 2018: This project has been recommended for rescoping.
The City of Tucson proposes to widen Speedway Boulevard to a six-lane divided roadway between Main Avenue and Interstate 10. This would include the widening and reconstruction of the existing underpass structure at the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) crossing. The improved Speedway Boulevard would have full urban amenities, including street lighting, drainage facilities, bike and pedestrian facilities and landscaping. The project would be jointly funded by the City of Tucson and the Federal Highway Administration. The City of Tucson, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, has initiated a design study for Speedway Boulevard, between Main Avenue and Interstate 10. Construction is not anticipated to begin for approximately five years. The study will follow the Federal environmental clearance process in evaluating the following for potential impacts; noise, air, historic district/cultural resources, threatened or endangered species, biological resources or presence of hazardous material.
